What a Breathing Light Actually Does

Alana Cahoon Meditation Book – Mindfulness, Mantras & Meditations Book

A breathing light is a small lamp that brightens and dims on a fixed cycle. You match your breath to the light. That is the whole mechanism, and its simplicity is the reason it works for people who find audio guidance distracting.

Why a visual cue helps

Counting breaths requires part of your attention. A light does the counting for you, which leaves more room for the thing you are actually trying to do.

Typical cycles

Most units offer a few paces — commonly around a four-second inhale with a longer exhale. A longer exhale than inhale is the pattern most guided practices use.

Where to put it

At eye level, slightly out of direct focus. You want to sense the change in brightness rather than stare at the lamp.

A note on expectations

These are timing aids, not medical devices. They will not treat a condition, and any product that says otherwise is overselling.
